In 1981, a group of El Paso activists established a women’s rights advocacy group entitled La Mujer Obrera.  Mercado Mayapan serves as the group’s center for community development and houses a café, mercado, and an onsite interpretive display that recounts the history and legacy of women’s rights activism in El Paso.
