Harlingen: Iwo Jima Monument and Museum

The Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph of the raising of a flag atop Iwo Jima became one of World War II’s most enduring images. Artist Felix de Weldon recreated the scene as a larger- than-life bronze sculpture near Arlington National Cemetery. His full-scale working model rises next to Valley International Airport (Harlingen Army Air Field during World War II) on the campus of the Marine Military Academy. A museum adjacent to the monument showcases World War II memorabilia, a film, and exhibits.
