The Houston Negro Hospital (now Riverside General Hospital) was built in 1926 in Houston’s Third Ward. The three –story, Spanish Colonial Revival-style building was Houston’s first nonprofit hospital for African American patients, and it provided a place of work for black physicians who were largely excluded during segregation from the city’s Anglo hospitals.
Today, the hospital continues to serve the community as an active medical facility. Be sure to visit nearby Emancipation Park, established in the 1870s by the efforts of Jack Yates and other African Americans. Named in commemoration of freedom from slavery, Emancipation Park also hosts annual Juneteenth events.
