Fort McIntosh served as the post for numerous African American infantry and cavalry units who patrolled the area and guarded the nearby international crossing of the Rio Grande, including the famed 10th cavalry of Buffalo Soldiers. Laredo Community College now uses Fort McIntosh’s buildings and structures, which are now labeled with signs denoting their original purposes. A gallery in the library contains a collection of historic paintings and photos of the fort.
