The buildings Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels had built to house the German immigration society, the Adelsverein, fell into disrepair after the society failed in 1848. The current museum structures were built in the twentieth century on the site of the original Sophienburg buildings. The Sophienburg Museum and Archives now features many exhibits detailing the history of the county – especially that of its German-Texan heritage.
