Charles Russell, Where the Best of Riders Quit. (Briscoe Western Art Museum)
Billy Schenck, Throwin’ a Loop (Briscoe Western Art Museum)
Before television and movies, paintings and illustrations helped shaped Americans’ views of cowboys and the West. Artists such as Frederic Remington, Charles Russell, and Frank Reaugh depicted cowboys as brave, noble and heroic. Other images captured the contemplation of a solitary individual on the range to the carousing and celebration at the end of a drive. Contemporary artists continue to sketch, paint, and sculpt cowboy life and the vastness of the American West with new interpretations. The Briscoe Western Art Museum presents artwork old and new in the heart of San Antonio.
