The planned “Air City” became a model airfield for flight training. During World War II, the “West Point of the Air,” as it was called, trained thousands of cadets and instructors. Towering over the Spanish Revival-style historic district is one of the most famous structures in military aviation, Building 100, known as the Taj Mahal, which contains offices, a rotunda, history exhibits and a large auditorium.
