San Juan: Basilica of Our Lady of San Juan del Valle

The basilica was originally constructed as a shrine in 1954, and was destroyed by an airplane crash in 1970. The edifice was rebuilt in 1979, constructed with 24-inch-thick limestone walls, terrazzo floors, and ornately faceted glass windows.  The chapel seats 1,800 people, and as one of the most visited basilicas in the United States, now serves as a point of pilgrimage for Catholic worshippers from Texas and Mexico.
